Soda Should Be A Rare Treat
Interesting fact:
One teaspoon of sugar or fat is equal to 5 grams.
Grab a can of soda out of the refrigerator. Look at the sugar content. Most sodas average about 30 grams of sugar. That is 6 teaspoons of sugar in one can of soda.
Soda should be a rare treat.
Grab a water instead, zero grams of sugar!

Heather Quillen and Lisa R. Ramey, D.O., co-founders of YoMedics™, contribute to a blog on www.yomedics.com that offers helpful tips and insights for parents about healthy living for kids.
Orlando, Fla. – June 30, 2009 – Heather Quillen and Lisa R. Ramey, D.O., co-founders of YoMedics™, each contribute to a children’s wellness blog, found at http://www.yomedics.com/blog. The website also features, among other things, articles and special reports relating to the health and well being of children. The blog section on the website is one of the most popular. With Heather and Dr. Lisa both mothers of two, they offer invaluable insight and tips to help keep your kids healthy, educate them about the importance of healthy choices, and offer ideas for helping your kids lose weight, if needed.
Recently, Dr. Lisa and Heather Quillen wrote about the health benefits of walking, compared to running. The blog points out that According to Adventure Magazine you can get 90 to 95 percent of the benefits of running from walking briskly. Heather and Dr. Lisa offered the following tip about encouraging children to be more active: “Most kids are not going to run long distance by choice. However, they need to play and be used to going for a brisk walk. Go for a family walk in the evening. This also allows for a great opportunity to discuss the events of the day.”
“We are determined to get your kids, and you, moving! Start with little steps then increase from there. The more knowledge and advice that YoMedics™ can spread to kids and families across the world, the more useful and fulfilled we are,” remarked Dr. Ramey.

Walking vs Running??
More and more studies are showing that brisk walking provides similar health benefits to running. According to Adventure Magazine you can get 90 to 95 percent of the benefits of running from walking briskly. This means walking fast, swinging the arms, sweating and breathing faster.
Long distance running can cause damage to cartilage and joints in people with underlying injuries or biomechanical abnormalities. Once present, the damage cannot be undone. For example running 6-8 miles per day at the age of 20 can lead to knee and hip problems by the age of 40. Who wants a knee or hip replacement at that age? These same principles apply to children. Most kids are not going to run long distance by choice. However, they need to play and be used to going for a brisk walk. Go for a family walk in the evening. This also allows for a great opportunity to discuss the events of the day. On the weekends plan a family hiking trip. Pack a lunch in the backpack and off you go. Take time to enjoy the trees around you, smell the flowers, listen to the birds and allow the kids to climb on the trees. WOW, the kids just used all 5 senses and did not even know it. Everyone will enjoy the time they have spent together. Stress will decrease and moods will improve.
YoMedics is determined to get your kids, and you, moving. Start with little steps then increase from there. The more knowledge and advice that YoMedics can spread to kids and families across the world the more useful and fulfilled we are. Indoor Fitness Routine

The Question: What is the Best Way to Reduce Stress? Exercise! Exercise is one of the best ways to control stress. Physically active people are less likely to experience stress-related symptoms such as headaches, stomachaches and muscle tightness. Teach children how to be aware of stress in their body and how to diffuse it effectively.
Exercise, exercise, exercise. Getting physical activity every day is just as important as eating right. Exercise helps kids do better in school and builds their self esteem. Make sure your children are getting one hour of exercise every day. They can play sports, dance or plan fun activities to do with their friends outdoors. Remember, kids learn by example. Take responsibility for your health too and set a good example for your children. Read more

Living a healthy lifestyle is a family affair. Remember to have lots of healthy foods and snacks in the refrigerator and cabinets, so no one is tempted to munch on super salty or sugary stuff. You can have fresh fruits and veggies washed and “at the ready”. There are so many really delicious produce choices this time of year, no excuses. YoMedics™ Nutritional Guide offers lots of great options and tips!
If your child is going to a summer program, make sure they will be served healthy, nutritious foods. This is certainly your right to ask and insist for your child. You are your child’s advocate and champion, so get in there and make sure it happens! If you pack their lunch and snacks make it healthy. It can be yummy, fun and good for them.
Summer is a time for lots of great activities too. If you live in a hot climate, as we do in Florida, you may have to plan your outdoor activities to avoid the heat of mid-day. However, morning and evening walks, bike rides and parks are all wonderful opportunities to get your kids out and MOVING! Be sure to bring lots of water to drink and do not forget the sunscreen!! We have a fun indoor routine on our website. Check it out at www.yomedics.com.
Car trips can be challenging, just follow the same guidelines. Bring your own healthy snacks and water for the ride. It ends up being much less expensive than stopping at a convenience store and you provide the healthy choices. No fussing about getting chips, cookies or soda in the store, you have planned ahead and have the healthy options with you. These are just some of the things you and your child will learn in our program. Give us a call with any questions, 407-314-8749.
Remember, you are the parent, your child’s advocate and champion. You make the purchasing decisions and you set the example. Make this summer a fun, happy, healthy one for you and your kids!
Don’t Be Fooled By Flashy Advertisements
Lisa R. Ramey, D.O.
One of the contributing causes of childhood obesity has been very affective product marketing. Let’s look at an example. CAPRI SUN advertises the pouches and 64 oz bottles as being a wonderful source of antioxidant Vitamins C and E to help support a healthy immune system. What they neglect to tell you is that the amount of sugar in the product and size of the product are major contributors to obesity. Where can you get antioxidants Vitamin C and E? Eating a healthy diet consisting of fresh fruits and vegetables. The lesson of the day: Don’t be fooled by flashy advertisements.
An Extra 120 Calories Can Go A Long Way
Lisa R. Ramey, D.O.
Did you know that if your child consumes an extra 120 calories per day they can gain 1 pound per month, or 12 pounds a year. What are some examples of 120 calorie items? Half of a candy bar, 1 soda, an extra teaspoon of butter or one tootsie roll all equal approximately 120 calories. Doesn’t sound like much but it really adds up. Think of this in the reverse. Eliminating 120 calories per day from your child’s diet can help your child lose 1 pound per month or 12 pounds in a year.
